Freaky. Or dark Freaky Friday.
I just watched this on Peacock tonight for the first time. This is a cool little gem to find for Halloween viewing. Vince Vaughn was really good in this role too, as were most of the characters. I was surprised at how despicable the one gay character was. Isaac was outed as a bigot and quite rapey in the first five minutes the character was on screen. And I think Vince Vaughn's Blissfield Butcher was actually a vampire. Or maybe in another draft this serial killer was supposed to be a vampire? There is a lot of vampire lore going on in the plot of the film.
First clue: when Booker, Millie's crush and football star, cuts his finger in shop class, the killer in Millie's body sucks the blood from his finger.
Clue two: the killer, now back in his Vince Vaughn body, takes five gunshots to the chest during the film's climax. He supposedly dies in the ambulance but the camera pans to his heart monitor fallen off his finger. But, we see that...
Clue three: only minutes after taking those five to the chest the killer is seemingly fine, not a wince of pain as he stalks Millies and takes on the family in the post-climax. It's only after he takes a sharp wooden stake to the chest, right in the heart, that he finally dies. Things that make you go Hmm.
My verdict: the killer was a vampire, and that's why the knife spoke to him, to his darkness, and the whole switcheroo was able to work. Or I've just wasted your time with false assumptions that has nothing to do with this movie. Freaky is a fun horror comedy without the vampire stuff, and I think I'll add it to the collection. This was one of the more fun and entertaining horror comedies I've watched in a while...
I pulled The Halloween Store by Ronald Kelly off the shelf and read a few chapters today. I also started reading Torments, by Lisa W Cantrell, her sequel to haunted house novel The Manse. The Manse was a surprise find. I found the whole novel online and read it just before October in about a week. I was captivated. And this sequel takes place in the aftermath of that story. Hidden gem novel, absolutely. It's been a great Halloweentober few days, to be sure. I highly recommend The Manse if you can find a copy! But excuse me, I have a bag of Reese's pumpkins to gorge myself on... #slothisgoodwhenitstherightfood
